Hello, thank you for visiting the IBS Register.
Our site was developed to help you find a therapist who can help you with IBS.
Developed by Michael Mahoney an award-winning therapist with over 30 years of experience working with people with IBS in their lives.
Please note that it is important to have your symptoms diagnosed by a medical doctor because some symptoms of IBS are similar to more sinister conditions, which have to be ruled out. So please avoid the temptation of self-diagnosis.
That said, please browse the site. We are in the early days of launch and are actively seeking suitably qualified therapists.
Please call back in a few weeks or send us an email telling us where you are, and we will contact you when we have a therapist near you.
What is IBS?
IBS is a common digestive disorder, causing symptoms such as bloating, stomach cramps, diarrhoea and constipation. Pain is frequently also a reported symptom.
These and other symptoms can vary in severity and frequency, ranging from a few hours, days, months and years in some cases. IBS is often a frustrating and troublesome condition. The severity of IBS symptoms can range from mild to severe. The IBS condition can often impact everyday life for the sufferer.
At the time of writing, there is no medical cure for IBS.
However, there is hope. Therapies such as hypnotherapy, CBT and mindfulness have all proven to help.
Changing diet and medications should also be considered. The important thing is not to give up looking for an effective treatment and management method.

What is Hypnotherapy?
Learn more about hypnotherapy
As long ago as 1984, after the first research study which used hypnotherapy with IBS patients, it was immediately shown to be highly effective in IBS management, including treating refractory IBS patients.
Management of symptoms is typically between 6 - 12 sessions depending on which protocol is used, your presenting symptoms, and other personal history taken with your chosen therapist.
Hypnotherapy is a natural state of being, using imagery and suggestion, and often reinforced between sessions using an audio recording. Your chosen therapist will outline your care plan before the commencement of sessions.
How hypnotherapy works is still not fully understood, however, research has shown great benefits have been achieved, including reduction of psychological aspects of IBS, such as Anxiety, Cognitive patterns and depression. Visceral sensitivity has also been shown to be improved.
Imaging studies have suggested hypnotherapy may normalise pain processing in the anterior cingulate cortex, a region of the brain that is over-active in some IBS patients.
Symptom improvement following sessions can be expected to continue.

You will work closely with your therapist, and between you a regime will be agreed upon.
The therapist will use specific cognitive and behavioural techniques during your sessions.
As with other therapies, you need to be committed and take part in and complete any goals and homework which may be assigned to you.

Research indicates that mindfulness and meditation stimulate changes in the brain, changing the processes of thoughts and emotional responses and is believed these change the IBS symptoms.
